New Music - The Twilight Sad

2012 brings a new album from one of my favorite bands. From Bonnie Scotland comes The Twilight Sad (in my opinion the best band you've never heard of). They don't have much a following in the US and I chalk that up to our radio being horrible and the fact that most Yanks have trouble with a thick Scottish accent. But I think James Graham's voice is amazing...unique; a perfect combination of emotional yet totally virile. Their music is haunting and beautiful and I'm very much looking forward to their LP, No One Can Ever Know, set to come out mid February.

And even more exciting- an American tour with the first stop in DC on Feb 23 at the Rock and Roll Hotel.
Tickets are only $12 and the venue is small and intimate so you'll get way more than your money's worth from these guys. They really are amazing.

Happy New Year, everyone!

I love a new year because I am a huge planner. I love to organize, map out, calculate, and check off lists full of to-dos. And a new year is a perfect time to make the greatest of all to-do lists: My New Years Resolutions.

#1: Return to blogging. It's been...nearly a year! Work got slammed around November 2010 and I was working 60-70 hour weeks solidly until August 2011. Then my boyfriend moved here from Ireland in July, we moved into a new apartment in October, the Holidays hit and etc etc etc. Life has been hectic but it's finally calmed down so no excuses. And I miss writing.

#2: Be healthier. Isn't this on everyone's list? More exercise, less carbs, completely cut off soda, get 8 hours of sleep each night, and floss my teeth every day. Oh and cook meals at home at least 5 times a week. Organic meals.

#3: Make a greater effort at mostly everything. Make the bed everyday. Even on days when I work from home, avoid the ease of hanging out in pajamas all day. Try harder at work. Don't take 5 days to respond to social emails and voice mails. Take the dog for longer walks.

#4: Less TV, more life. I love TV. I mean 6-7 hours a day love TV. And to be fair, 90% of what I watch is educational. But still, in relying on the TV to entertain, I'm not getting out and about enough. So le boyfriend and I are going to use at least one day a weekend to go experience something. Museums, shows, live sporting events....maybe I'll even check out living social.

So what are your resolutions? Any tips on how to keep them?

Farewell to Paul Hartley, the Footballer

I havent posted in months. Work is insane and life is busy.
But today's news warrants a bit of an homage.

At 34, Paul Hartley has determined he feels his fitness and age have made playing football at top levels too difficult. It is a sad day for those of us who were fans, and we remember some of his finest moments...with Hearts, with Celtic, playing for Scotland and for half the clubs in Scotland, at Bristol City, and in his early promising days as skipper at Aberdeen.

I am so happy to have had the chance to stalk...errr.... watch Paul play live with Aberdeen at Hearts a few months ago while I was in Edinburgh.

I hope he has a long career in management or commentary or male modeling.

This breaks my heart:

“The realisation hit me over a couple of weeks at the end of January into February. We played Celtic in the Co-operative Cup and lost 4-1. Then we played them in the league and lost 3-0 a few days later.

I felt then I wasn’t able to compete at the level I needed to. Players were running past me and I couldn’t keep up with them.

My mind wasn’t at ease and I was frustrated at players running away from me and getting the better of me.

I spoke to Craig Brown and, although he maybe thought it was a wee dodgy period, I knew it was time to go. I didn’t want to embarrass myself.”

Aging is depressing. And Ryan Giggs is greedy with his secret location for the fountain of youth. I just feel so sad reading this like I feel sad when I see I can't eat 10 cupcakes without gaining weight anymore like I used to be able to when I was 21.

Personally, I think the word got out that I have a boyfriend and have had for many months now and Paul just lost his will to play. Understandable.

All joking aside, Paul, you've been legendary. And you will be missed. Hurry back now....you'd look just as good in a manager's suit and tie.....

Wonder if it was Harters himself who is sending parcels with bullets to Neil Lennon. Hiding under the guise of being old mates, Paul's mother didnt raise a fool. Celtic boss would be a nice post for the man. If Ben Olsen wasnt the messiah of DC United, I'd hope Harters could make moves to this side of the pond. I'll be watching his space, interested to see what happens next.

The ICC World Cup is here. And I'll be watching to support some of my favorite cricketers. Here's 10 for you to get to know:

1. Paul Collingwood - England

Age: 34

Playing role: Allrounder

Batting: Right-hand bat

Bowling: Right-arm medium

He's the Ryan Giggs of cricket to me. A good leader; leads by example. Not too flashy, keeps his head down and does his job. Oh yeah and very handsome.

Colli announced his retirement from test cricket in January but he will continue playing T20 and ODI.
I may have shed a tear over that.

2. Daniel Vettori - New Zealand (captain)

Age: 31

Playing role: Allrounder

Batting: Left-hand bat

Bowling: Slow left-arm orthodox

Specs. Scruff. And one of the best LBW appeals ever. Dude's HOWZAT is hilarious.

He's a hot family man and a solid leader.

Multi-talented. Taking up football for charity. Bless.

3. Graeme Swann - England

Age: 31

Playing role: Bowler, hilarious tweeter

Batting: Right-hand bat

Bowling: Right-arm offbreak

Named 2010 England Cricketer of the Year and one of the top ranked test bowlers in the World, Swanny takes wickets like candy from a baby.

Not to mention the dude has a righteous sense of humor and an excellent taste in music. Follow him on twitter and catch the banter with Jimmy Anderson and Tim Bresnan. Comic gold.

4. Sachin Tendulkar- India

Age: 37

Playing role: Top-order batsman

Batting: Right-hand bat

Bowling: Right-arm offbreak

He's the Michael Jordan of Indian cricket. He's a legend on the pitch and a philanthropist off. You can't dislike the man.

5. William Porterfield - Ireland (Captain)

Age: 26

Batting: Left-hand bat

Bowling: Right-arm offbreak

Every time an Irishman questions that the country even has a cricket squad, William Porterfield and the baby Jesus cry.
Remember in Invictus when all the black South Africans hated the National rugby team until Mandela made growing grassroots support a priority? Ireland need a Chester. A Catholic cricketer from the Republic. Someone like...oh....I don't know. Eoin Morgan?! (I will cover that later). Most Irish see cricket as a Proddy sport and to be fair, it has been. Maybe there could be an Irish Invictus and Porterfield could be Matt Damon. And I could have a cameo.

6. Eoin Morgan - England. And it should be Ireland because he's fecking Irish. He was born in Dublin. And unless he wants me to reverse sweep his leg he should go back to God's Country. One broken finger is nothing, Eoin.Get thee in Green or perhaps you'll see what two hands full of broken fingers feels like. He makes William Porterfield and the baby Jesus cry more than everyone else combined. Anyway...he's withdrawn due to injury (karma). But I still have love for Eoin. And his batting. And his little Irish brogue.

7. Chris Gayle - Windies

Age: 31

Playing role: Batsman

Batting: Left-hand bat

Bowling: Right-arm offbreak

I love him. I love the fact that he sometimes looks like Eddie Murphy as the lead singer of Sexual Chocolate in Coming to America. He's a personable dude who interacts with fans on twitter and to me, that means something. He is a complete force at bat.and in my opinion he was robbed of the captaincy this year. Infectious smile or what?

8. Morne Morkel - South Africa

Age: 26

Playing role: Bowler

Batting: Left-hand bat

Bowling: Right-arm fast

Amid an epic sea of douche of Graeme Smith proportions stand the Morkel brothers, like beacons of hope that South African men are all not basically American fraternity guys with better accents. What happened to Albie anyway? Both of them are good looking. Like the Lamonts of South African cricket. Google image search "Sean and Rory Lamont." You're welcome.

9. Jonathan Trott - England

Age: 29

Playing role: Top-order batsman

Batting: Right-hand bat

Bowling: Right-arm medium

Trotty has become a recent fave. Serving up tons like it was child's play. I like the guy.

10. Squad USA
Age: The average age is like 65. For real.
God Bless them.
They're like the Jamaican bobsled team from that film with John Candy.

Irini Shayk has got be one of the most physically beautiful women in the world.
You can either have the eyes and lips OR the body, Irini, greedy girl.

Crissy pants' lady friend has made it to the cover of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition and she looks unbelievable despite being put in some of the most hideous bikinis I've seen since a trip to Kings Dominion water park when I was like 15.

Lest ye not be too envious of this gorgey girl though.
I don't know if it's a fair trade to be blessed with looks like hers if the price you pay is...

I know some of you girls and gays think he's the hottest thing in the world, but I can't handle his crispy fried greasiness.

Valentines Day Dinner: Broiled Salmon and Quinoa Pilaf

For any guys in a Valentine's Day crunch: Forget flowers and candy. Forget monumental gifts. Most girls just want you to cook them dinner (or cook dinner together-even better) and give them something handmade.

So here you go...simple, quick, and really healthy. Your girlfriend won't feel all fatsy after eating this, which works out better for you.

Unless you know how to cook Indian food. Then forget all of this and make some Saag Paneer. Saag Paneer is the business.

For anyone in DC, I recommend making a day of it Sunday and heading to Eastern Market to pick out the ingredients. *It's closed on Monday so you would have to go Sunday* That way, you're buying super fresh locally grown food straight from the vendor. Get dessert from the Fine Sweet Shop bakery...it's amazing.

Anyway.

Valentine's Day Broiled Salmon and Carrot, Tomato, Spinach and Quinoa Pilaf

Broiled Salmon

Ingredients:

2 tbsp minced garlic
6 tbsp EV Olive Oil
1 tsp dried basil
1 tsp salt
1 tsp black ground pepper
1 tbsp lemon juice
1 tbsp chopped fresh parsley
2 6 oz wild caught salmon fillets. Don't settle for farm raised salmon. That stuff is nasty. Just like American non-organic meat is nasty and probably the reason why we have 9 year old kids running around with mustaches and bitch tits.*

Directions

Mix garlic, olive oil, basil, salt, pepper, lemon juice, and parsley
Place salmon fillets in covered glass dish and marinate for at least 1 hour
Place fillets in aluminum foil, cover with marinade, and broil for about 35 minutes
Garnish with a sliced lemon and some chopped vegetables

Carrot, Tomato, and Spinach Quinoa Pilaf

Ingredients

2 teaspoons olive oil
1/2 onion, chopped
1 cup quinoa
2 cups water
2 tablespoons vegetarian chicken-flavored bouillon granules
1 teaspoon ground black pepper
1 teaspoon thyme
1 carrot, chopped
1 tomato, chopped
1 cup baby spinach

Directions

Heat the olive oil in a sauce pan over medium heat; cook and stir the onion in the hot oil until translucent, about 5 minutes. Lower the heat, stir in quinoa, and toast, stirring constantly, for 2 minutes. Stir in the water, bouillon granules, black pepper, and thyme; raise heat to high and bring to a boil. Cover, reduce heat to low, and simmer for 5 minutes.
Stir in the carrots. Cover and simmer until all water is absorbed, about 10 more minutes. Turn off the heat, add the tomatoes and spinach, and stir until the spinach is wilted and the tomatoes have given off their moisture, about 2 minutes.

Accompany with white wine like Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Grigio.

Extra sexy if you make a playlist of tunes to listen to while preparing the food. Put some Frank Sinatra, Joao Gilberto, Tom Jobim, and Serge Gainsbourg in a mix. Perfect for cooking and pre-dinner cocktails.

Minka Kelly Looks Healthy....and Gorgeous

Last weekend I went to see the film "the Roommate" which is basically just an adaptation of "Single White Female" from 30 something NYC in 1990 to contemporary college life. The film starts Leighton Meester and Minka Kelly; both girls are absolutely gorgeous.

While watching the film I noticed that Minka Kelly is definitely not a stick figure. And watching her interview on a talk show I really noted that this girl has a normal fit and healthy body....and a really gorgeous face.
But anyway, she has been voted "Sexiest Woman Alive" by Esquire Magazine. Although her recent FHM shoot has obviously been photoshopped to hell, I at least applaud the recognition that a girl who looks like she eats AND works out hard to keep her shape is "sexiest."

So work it, Minka.

"Meat Lover's" Vegetarian Peach Puppy Bowl Chili

Tomorrow is the Super Bowl. Or in my apartment, The Puppy Bowl.

One of the main reasons I can't get into American football is the frequent breaks and adverts but given the Super Bowl is actually known for debuting the best commercials of the year, maybe I'll watch. The other reason being the enormous lack of good looks (in my opinion) of American football players. Too bulky for me.

But the Puppy Bowl has no shortness of eye candy. The cutest pups ever actually.

Seriously. It's like Christmas for Miss Giggs and Miss Busby. Scooby Snacks, Tuna, and for me...anything with cheese.

And one of my favorite winter recipes perfect for cold February and the year's biggest football game:
"Meat Lovers" Vegetarian Chili

I use Smart Ground soy crumbles for a meaty effect. You can use either the original or Mexican style for even more flavor:

Ingredients:
1 package smart ground
1 can light kidney beans, drained. Seriously. Drain them.
1 can no salt added diced tomatoes
1/3 cup diced red bell pepper
1/4 cup diced red onion
1/3 cup diced peaches. Yes, peaches. It's delicious.
1 cup water
And I am lazy and just use the Old El Paso chili powder packet

In a skillet, add 1/2 cup water and the smart ground, breaking it apart into crumbles. Add the crumbles and the rest of the ingredients in a pot, bring to a boil, then put to low heat. The longer you let it sit, the better the chili.

Serve in a bowl and add reduced fat shredded cheddar. You're looking at only about 200 calories per serving.

Or go "Cincinnati style" and serve the chili over a plate of whole grain spaghetti. Delicious!

I've been thinking about my earlier post on the double standards of aging.
And I believe there are a number of female celebrities who actually seem to grow more beautiful each year....

What seems to be common in all these younger/older photos is that the women in them have really come into their own style. Hair, makeup, wardrobe, and even posture and facial expression are so refined, poised, and confident.

And that's the key. When you feel sexy, you look sexy. Even after 15 years have gone by. Just check out how much they've changed....for the better....as they got older. These ladies are looking amazing!

Note: All of these timeless beauties are in their 40s except Kate Beckinsale, who is 37.

The Double Standard of Aging

I've just finished the film "the Time Traveler's Wife" and although I found the film boring, I found Eric Bana worth dedicating and hour and a half to watching.

Eric Bana's crow's feet and salt and pepper scruff add to his good looks in my opinion.
But can you imagine an actress adding to her sex appeal with every wrinkle and gray hair?

What is the origin of this double standard? Are men with laugh lines seen as more established, sophisticated, and experienced and women with the same signs of aging seen as aged and haggard and in declining beauty?

For every one anti-aging product for men there must be 40 for women.
Is this because we women put the pressure on ourselves?

The majority of men say they prefer a fresh looking face over one made up with trendy colors.Polls also show a favorite outfit of men for women is snug jeans and a white tshirt or a simple sun dress. And hair? "Just out of bed and slightly tousled" is always a winner in these surveys. And finally....when asked their preference men tend to prefer a little meat on a woman's bones.

So who are we jumping through these beauty hoops for? Ourselves? Other women?
Are we putting the pressure on ourselves to value youth just like we tend to value ridiculously thin bodies, perfectly blown out hair, and $500 shoes?

Aging is depressing. Youth is something you have and you lose, which in my opinion is so much tougher to let go of than something you've never had. I look at my face in a magnifying mirror and slather potions and lotions all over my eyes in attempts to combat the first sign of any lines. And PS: None of these products has actually seemed to work.

Maybe men don't notice the wrinkles we obsess over just like they don't notice (or mind) the tiniest bit of cellulite or other "imperfections" we see. Maybe our facial little lines are seen as beautiful to the men who love us. Maybe we're just pressuring ourselves. Unnecessarily.

I'm sure that somewhere within the male psyche is a subconscious attraction to women in their childbearing years for evolutionary purposes. And deep within our primal female brain we look for mates who seem like they can provide and protect hence a gray hair is actually sexy....but I think we take this all a little far. Just like wider hips and bigger breasts would signify fertility, that doesn't mean that there's no hope for petite girls with A cups.

If beauty is in the eye of the beholder, maybe we just need to start looking at ourselves as beautiful, even as we show signs of growing older.

Easier said than done. And I'm still getting a damn microdermabrasion and collagen mask at Red Door Spa next month.

Pumpkin Pie brings Sexy Back

The scent of pumpkin pie is an aphrodisiac? Who knew? But it certainly explains why my boyfriend never fails to mention how he loves the way I smell after a bath.
According to studies, the scent of pumpkin pie can cause male errrrrrr arousal to increase by 40%.

I have been a huge fan of Bath and Body Works Sweet Cinnamon Pumpkin lotions and home fragrances and I stock up every year during their semi annual online sales because the scent isn't commonly carried in their stores.


My favorites include body lotion, candles, and scented oils

And every fall just as I'm sad that Summer is coming to an end, I happily remember the annual return of my favorite Pumpkin Spice latte at Starbucks. Even though this drink is seasonal, some baristas will go the extra mile to dig up the ingredients to make it for you year-round.

Even ice cream stores now often offer a pumpkin pie flavor (delicious with whipped cream and cinnamon sprinkles).

Sadly, I'm not a fan of pumpkin pie itself (much like I love everything coffee flavored but I don't like coffee) but I do love pumpkin pie cupcakes.
Here's an easy recipe....whip these up and leave your house smelling amazing.

Pumpkin Pie Cupcakes

Ingredients:

1 1/3 cups self-rising flour
1 30 oz can of packed pumpkin, or 30 oz fresh pumpkin

1 cup white sugar

1/2 cup brown sugar

1 1/2 tablespoons pumpkin pie spice

2 1/2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
1/3 cup egg whites
1 1/2 cups of half-and-half

Yields: 2 dozen cupcakes

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (177 degrees C)
2. Line 2 12-cup muffin tins.
3. With a fork, mix the flour and pumpkin pie spice.
4. Use a large bowl and mix the pumpkin, sugars, vanilla, egg whites and half-and-half. Mix on low until smooth and creamy.
5. Turn the mixer to medium and slowly add the flour and spice mixture, mixing well until all the flour is incorporated.
6. Fill each muffin cup 1/2 way (about 1/3 cup).
7. Bake for 20 minutes and remove from oven and cool. Remember the cupcakes will sink as they cool.
8. Top with cream cheese frosting or whipped topping. Sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar

So the Giggs fitness video is out.

Now I have a lovely boyfriend so I need to respectfully watch what I say here. But I'd give him a pass if Jessica Biel put out a video where she was holding a downward dog and he suddenly had the urge to take up yoga.

I just want to know who Miss Thing the yoga spotter is and how she got that job. Biff needs to get her damn hands off of him.

At any rate, either yoga is truly working wonders for this 37 year old legend who is still running down the wing like he was 25 or Ryan has discovered a room full of chalices, all of which could be the Holy Grail....and he chose wisely. (Obvi he recognizes the cup of a carpenter).

We will be purchasing "Giggs Fitness: Strength and Conditioning, Inspired by Yoga." Warrior Pose with the ledge himself? Of course.

We've all got a little Andy Gray and Richard Keys in us. Unfortunately.

Not the sharpest knives in the Sky Sports drawer, are they?

Andy Gray and Richard Keys sacked? Fair enough I think.

Here's the background:
During the Wolves v Liverpool match Saturday, the two Sky Sports commentators made statements indicating their belief that a female linesman would not know how to make an offside ruling due to the fact that women are unfamiliar with that law of the game.

Were the two more shock jock pundits rather than professional commentators I would say everyone should calm down.

But given their role, the comments made were beyond unprofessional.
Liken their statements to me going into my job as an management consultant and telling my client that he should not contract a vendor because the bidding corporation has a black/white/Asian/Hispanic CEO and "everyone knows that black/white/Asian/Hispanic people couldn't possibly understand IT consolidation."
Ummmmm.....yeah..... I'd expect to be fired on the spot. Pretty vile thing to say, not to mention ignorant, incorrect, arrogant, unprofessional, unfounded, and unprovoked.

Had Gray and Keys mentioned the race of the linesman there wouldn't even be a debate.

They represented Sky Sports, not the Howard Stern show; they were working in an environment with certain professional expectations and their actions fell far short.

As for their comments, I won't even address them because they are beyond ridiculous.

However upsetting, some good may come out of this situation. Not only will attention be brought to the need to dispel stereotypes of women not understanding sport, but also hopefully to our own patterns of speech.

This weekend I took the 13 year old girl I mentor out for a manicure and some girl talk and she opened up to me about the less than stellar behavior of a boy in her class. I caught myself saying "Well, boys your age are so immature. In fact, they sort of stay immature until well into their 20s...and even then its a struggle."
This sort of tongue in cheek comment seemed clever at the moment but in retrospect I was making sexist comments no different than Gray and Keys.
I generalized...and in a negative way. And in my attempt to sort of instill a certain mistrust of boys in my protege (mainly because I want her to not be hurt) I may have done some damage.

So good riddance to Gray and Keys but let us all remember that people who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones....they should throw parties :-)

Get Fit with Netflix

If you have a Netflix account, check out the "sports and fitness" section of videos ready to watch immediately.
They have a pretty decent selection and for anyone like me who is a little bored of the treadmill and on busy days when I only have an hour to dedicate to working out, you can spice it up and try out different videos with just a few clicks of the mouse.

Last week I did the Crunch Workout Cardio Abs 32 minute video. I found the cardio part to be a bit too easy and although I didn't think I was working my abs too hard, I woke up sore the next day.

I plan on working my way through the available videos and I've vowed to take up Candlelight Yoga before bed at least a few times a week.

I have absolutely no excuses now. No putting off the gym because "its rush hour" or "disgusto women walk around the changing rooms and I swear to Christ they've never seen a razor let alone a waxing kit." (Seriously, some people really need to check themselves). I can do this from the comfort of home. In 30 minutes. While dinner is cooking instead of watching some pointless Kardashians show that is sucking the lifeblood out of me. Chop chop!

Haagen Dazs Single Serving Cup in Strawberry 220 calories

I don't believe in completely restrictive dieting. I don't think it works for 95% of people. If you deny yourself any little scrap of your favorite indulgence, as soon as you go off your diet...or even in a moment of weakness, you will likely gorge yourself on whatever you've been missing. Not to mention, you'll be less likely to ever diet again because you have equated healthy eating with unnecessary hardship.

The only time I've successfully cut certain foods entirely from my diet was when I decided to go meatless two and a half years ago. And A) Although I liked chicken and the odd cheeseburger, I didn't adore meat and B) The reasoning behind the change was philosophical.

When I initially cut meat, I also decided to cut all animal product out and go full vegan. It lasted 6 months and I was underweight, my blood pressure was even lower, and I was completely vitamin B12 deficient. My doctor suggested I put dairy and seafood back into my diet and I literally left her office and went straight to get a pizza where I consequently stuffed my face on the delicious cheese I'd been missing. And I gained 6 lbs in two weeks because I was gorging on the pizza I'd deprived myself of for half a year.

So in my new quest to eat healthily I'm not entirely cutting out ice cream, pizza, and chips. I'm moderating them. If I go a week without ice cream, I know I'm going to end up at Baskin Robbins like some kind of a crack fiend on a random Wednesday night at 10 PM getting a 3 scoop brownie sundae with whipped cream, hot fudge, and a cherry.

I believe if I eat a spinach salad for lunch, salmon, quinoa, and veggies for dinner, and snack on baby carrots and hummus, then I have earned some ice cream. I absolutely love these new single-serving ice creams from Haagen Dazs and Ben and Jerrys. At around 200 calories each, you won't derail your hard work with a small and well deserved indulgence. And each little cup comes with a spoon as well and because the spoon is small, I actually sit and enjoy eating my dessert rather than mindlessly scooping out tablespoonful after tablespoonful of a pint of ice cream and not even truly taking the time to savor the moment.

I also love jello pudding cups topped with whipped cream (100 calories each + 20 whipped cream calories). Don't go for sugar-free though. Don't go for sugar-free anything or diet soda. First of all, the chemicals in sweetener are horrendous. Second of all, despite the lack of calories, sweetener still has the same effect on the body. So you get the same insulin spike except your body doesn't register any calories. You're not filled at all. And what goes up must come down, especially in the case of insulin. Ever notice that you're starving an hour after eating something "sugar-free?" That's why. Eat the real thing. In moderation. Enjoy it and be mindful of every delicious bite.

You'll be far more likely to maintain your new healthy eating patterns rather than people who diet hard core for 3 weeks and then binge, you'll be happier (hard core dieters are always so cranky!), and you'll be positively re-enforcing your hard work with a little reward every day.

Fit for 2011

This week I watched the shows "Heavy" (it was really, really good by the way) and "I used to be Fat" and I saw advertisements for "Biggest Loser" and "Shedding for the Wedding."

Then there's "Dance Your Ass Off," "the 650 lb Virgin," "Celebrity Fit Club," and "Ruby"......all shows about people who are morbidly obese who lose weight through diet change and exercise and put together these inspiring stories about healthy life style changes and hard work.

Although a tad redundant, I can see how these programs may inspire people who otherwise feel defeated to start their own battles against weight and unhealthy behaviors.

But the obese aren't the only people who find healthy eating and rigorous exercise to be challenging. But where are the shows for people in normal weight ranges who also need to make changes? "Thin" doesn't necessarily mean "healthy."

Would a show about non-overweight people who decide to throw themselves into a strict exercise regimen and enforce healthy diet choices just come off as totally superficial? Would interest groups start protesting that this sort of thing is somehow a promotion of eating disorders or exercise bulimia?

You don't need to be 400 lbs to love love love red velvet cupcakes and caramel frappuccinos and salty fried food. It's a struggle not to eat an abundance of dessert and pizza for everyone.

I love cheese and bread and Haagen Daz just as much as a larger woman, believe me. Pizza is my weakness and whenever I decide to give up coca-cola for periods of time, I initially feel like I'm in withdrawal.

I, and other people who don't necessary struggle with weight, may have less of an uphill battle when it comes to getting to a healthy place, but I can attest that maintaining a healthy lifestyle is still a struggle not to be downplayed.

Sometimes I wish Jillian Michaels was yelling at me when I'm not pushing through my intervals on the treadmill or on days when I really don't feel motivated to work out. Just because I am a size 0/2 (4 UK) doesn't mean I feel good after almost a month of taking time off from the gym and indulging in Christmas cookies and Dublin and Edinburgh's finest pizza and vino while on vacation.

I work with a guy who is pretty svelte. I offered him one of the cupcakes that I'd made for the people in my office and he declined saying he had to watch his cholesterol and blood pressure after a recent trip to the doctor showed his levels to be high. This is a 32 year old guy with a 32 inch waist. My case in point. Here is an example where someone's diet may actually be a matter of life and death and he doesn't even need to shed a pound.

Maybe to document a thin person getting healthy isn't as appealing because the visible results are subtle. So the scale would move up or down 3-5 lbs....that doesn't exactly make for that melodramatic "weigh in" moment.

But 3-5 lbs can feel like a lot for people who are pretty in-tune with their bodies. 5 additional lbs of holiday feasting to me can put me in a funk, suck energy out of me, and actually make me feel depressed. So its not exactly about "vanity" weight; it's also about just feeling fit and happy.

So, I won't hold my breath for an inspiring program for a demographic of size 0s who really want to be in the best shape they can possibly be in and to put the ice cream down and coke down and opt for veggies and water instead.

But I won't wait to start my new plan to get fit either.

I've never dieted in my life and I don't plan on starting. What I do plan on doing is moderating the pizza and the candy and trying to eat healthy foods 90% of the time. I want to feel better.

And I've always exercised. I've played soccer since I was 4, ran my first 5K when I was 10, and work out 4-5 days a week still. But I admit that I rarely push myself in my work outs. I want to start really pushing it to the limit. No more run-jogs......I will sprint-run.

And I will blog about it. So anyone else who is reading and wanting to feel fitter and healthier may be inspired or maybe leave comments as I write and share your tips and tricks and stories from your journey to a healthier you too.

For anyone who has read my blog, there has been plenty of mention about a certain Scottish footballer...a certain Paul Hartley....as evidenced here.

I'd just like to share that two months ago, I saw Paul in action at Tynecastle when I was on holiday in Scotland with my boyfriend who is amazing and got tickets for Hearts V Aberdeen....

And I'd like to report that there were no incidents of pitch invasion or stalkery of any sort.
And if Jessica Biel should ever be appearing in Washington DC, I owe my boyfriend two tickets.

I loved my SPL experience despite the fact that Aberdeen were annihilated. But I was shocked...no alcohol served at the ground?!?! I think Americans would never buy tickets to sporting events if that was the case.

Mystic Spraying in 2011

One of my greatest resolutions in 2011 was to end my toxic relationship with the tanning bed. And I didn't expect it to be easy. Tanning is actually addictive and I've been at it for a while now. It's counter-intuitive because we all know the horrible risks associated with tanning but I actually felt healthier after each 12 minute session. Maybe it's the Vitamin D, or the fact that you usually sweat a little in the bed, but tanning actually lifted my mood. Unfortunately, tanning also caused me to notice little tiny wrinkles forming around my eyes. And now if someone is vain enough to tan, they're probably vain enough to be bothered by wrinkles.

So I knew it was time to break up. My $55/month salon membership was the only thing keeping me going back even though Id cut down my sessions to once (ok, maybe twice) a week.

But here's the thing. I have that pesky Irish gene which makes me pale. And not pretty pale (like that one girl from Girls Aloud who looks like she's never seen the light of day yet somehow it works for her). Just pale. Washed out. So I wasn't ready to go completely melanin au naturale. Enter Mystic Spray.

Mystic spray is amazing, sunless, and completely safe. I changed my salon membership so that I'm eligible only for mystic sessions and now, once a week, I go in and the process takes about 2 minutes total. I went today and I have a nice, bronze (not orangey) glow sans any guilt about putting my skin through hell.

You just go inside this futuristic booth and you're sprayed head to toe for 2 minutes, you dry off, and in 2-3 hours, your color shows up.

GF may want to put a shower cap on her head though.....

The only down side is you can't shower or work out for 4 hours after you've been in order to give your skin time to absorb the spray.

Breaking up with the tanning bed isn't easy to do. But I already feel so happy with my decision. And maybe its all in my head, but I swear those little crows feet around my eyes are starting to disappear!

Chipotle "Chicken" Panini

Panera's Chipotle Chicken Panini. Look Delicious? It is. But it's also 900 calories.

One of the most delicious things I remember from my carnivore years is Panera's Chipotle Chicken Panini.
Going meatless had me trying to re-create all the things I missed most and a nice by-product of my food alchemy is that these new recipes I was trying always seemed to cut the calories of the original by at least half.

I won't lie and say I've found delicious equivalents for all meat dishes. Nothing can touch a Five Guys (or In N Out Burger) Double cheeseburger.
But some dishes are not only just as good as the "real thing," they're actually better. No joke.

Per Panera's website, a Chipotle Chicken on Artisan French panini contains 840 calories, 38 grams of fat, 12 of which are saturated, 140 mg cholesterol, 2160 mg of sodium (!!!), 72 grams of carbs, 52 grams of protein

So here's a healthy and meatless alternative my old favorite Panera staple:

2 slices Whole Grain bread, toasted (180 calories)
2 strips of Smart Bacon (40 calories, 6 g protein)
Spicy Chipotle Hummus (45 calories) Panera uses some kind of Chipotle spread which is loaded with fat. This hummus tastes even better and has 1/4 the calories.
1 block of grilled tofu, spices added (120 calories, 20 g protein)
1 slice of low fat cheddar (80 calories, 4.5 g protein)
Any veggies you want to add

That's 465 calories. Over 30 g of protein. Minus all the sodium, cholesterol and saturated fat. Plus more fiber from the whole grains and hummus. Win.

This is fried tofu. Its not a bad replacement for chicken.
I don't like soft tofu but when it's grilled, its pretty delicious.

Pretty amazing, huh?

Resolutioner's Salad

For those of us who have resolved to be more healthy in 2011, I have a recipe for a salad so good, I could eat it every day.

3/4 cup baby spinach
3/4 cup field greens
chopped red onion
chopped red peppers
cucumber slices
1/2 slice of Swiss cheese singles, chopped (adds only 30 calories and you get some more protein and calcium)
1 can of chunk light tuna in water, drained (only 70 calories and all protein!) Don't even think of adding mayonnaise. That stuff grosses me out.
2 chopped slices of Smart Bacon. Smart bacon is one of the few meatless products that actually does taste as good as I remember the real thing to taste. And 20 calories per slice and NO CHOLESTEROL!

I hate tomatoes but adding chopped tomatoes and some flax seeds would make this salad even healthier.

Now add 2 tbsp of Vidalia Onion dressing (60 calories) and you won't believe that something under 250 calories tastes so good and contains so many nutrients.

And don't worry if your dressing is mostly fat as long as the fat is either monosaturated or polyunsaturated. Those are the healthy kinds of fat that can actually help in weight loss. And studies have shown that when nutrients from those veggies in your salad are digested at the same time as healthy fats, they are better absorbed in the system so you're making the most of eating right!

Good luck with your resolutions and with being more healthy in general.

It's been a big month for Paul.
Made captain at Aberdeen, seen a hat trick of penalties his first match as a Don, rumors swirling about a recall for Scotland's Euro 2012 Qualifying Campaign, and I'm single.
Everything is just falling into place.

But first, let me caveat: I was once misguided in my thinking. I, for one, am very opinionated about men behaving in a manner that would appear a) superficial and b) lecherous. Was my attention to one Mr Hartley in a public forum an example of the old glass houses adage?
No. No, it is not.
And let me explain why any argument to the contrary would be flawed
A) Paul Hartley is an everyman. He is 5'7", pale, rather unkempt, a bit ponchey at times.....he is not a chiseled face muscle man. Nor is he flashy in any way.
Lest I remind that this.....this is the man I believe to be so interesting:

If a man would be threatened by that, then blog or no blog, I can't help him.
Mr. Hartley is no fine physical specimen. He's just a dude. A natural leader who keeps his head down until he is provoked, at which time it appears he could rip a head off with his bare hands. And thus his appeal. Quiet, mysterious, talented, passionate, and virile.
This is not tit for tat for tits n' that. Paul Hartley is not the male equivalent of a female celebrity who uses sex to get ahead in her career. I can run an image search of Paul without having to worry that several entries would cause me to lose my job upon clicking.
If anything, men should be confident if this is the dude their girlfriend thinks is the hottest thing since sliced bread. I once dated a guy who said his celebrity crush was Serena Williams. I never knew if he was serious or not, but I sure as hell didn't feel insecure about that one.

B) It's not lecherous. If I were to drone on about men with money then it would strike the same societal nerve as men who drone on about "hot chicks." Yes, within the norms of our current society, those two are parallel comparisons. These are the premiums which shallow people put on things. Men- "beauty" and women "money." Don't debate me on this. I am right and you are wrong.

Well we all know I love Mike Wedderburn to pieces (I overlook his penchant for Manchester City) as evidenced here and here and I can't imagine my morning....or any of our mornings...being the same without him.

Which is why I'm finding myself freaked out about an odd bump on his right cheek and huge bags under his twinkling little eyes. Yes, Wedderburn is like the Santa Claus of Sky Sports.
He's always got a Mona Lisa Smile and I sometimes wonder if that's just because he's more clever than the rest of the population and thus he is just always amused at the stupidity of those around him (I love you, Millie, but sometimes I wonder if you're drunk or on heavy pain killers).

I rest my case.

I just met my three week old niece and while I was holding her my mother said "she's not even much bigger than the day she was born."

Oh man if there's one thing I've taken away from Break-Upocalypse 2010 its never to get so emo over a dude ever again.

There are plenty of other, more useful things to become all emo about. And it is then when we daydream about cruising around the streets of Manchester with Moz and Co. in 1984 but at the age we are now. Or maybe like 22 or 23.

In 1984, I had a sweet pink Huffy and I came home one afternoon to find my Mother had given the bike to these destitute kids who had escaped Communist Poland and were being sponsored by our (her) church. She pulled antics like that all the time. And that's why- at the ripe old age of 6 I totally identified with the misery behind the Smiths. I was a morose and odd little child. You would be too if you lived in Germany and spoke hardly a lick of the language and played on the swings by yourself everyday. Anyway.

Two of my most anticipated sporting events of May have been ruined.
The Champions League Final and the Heineken Cup.
And why? Because all sides participating can be filed under "I don't care."

A champions league final featuring Bayern Munchen and Inter Milan? Snooze. It's on a Saturday and I still probably won't bother watching. We have better things to do. Like laying out in the sun.
And to think just last year I was in Manchester to be in the thick of it all as the boys were in Rome. I decided on flights to Mancunia instead a) because the cider is better in England than in Italy b) I had a free place to stay- thanks, Daws much obliged c) it is Mecca d) we combined holiday advertures and traveled down south to Brighton and Canterbury for County T20 as well. And oh my God, whatever "seafood scampi" means in UK food is NOT the delicious shrimp scampi I was expecting. Pack your own food when going to the cricket. Seriously no bueno.

And this year? All lost on away goals and injuries and the inability to focking man mark that little pervert Ribery.
PS I'd still be pleased to have Ribery at Old Trafford. But until that day comes, hes just a Lolita loving pervert.

Last year I was somewhere in this crowd of 99% men, about 6 deep in the Old Wellington's incredible cider. Twas a top 10 day of my life. Would have been a Top 3 if United had decided to take the pitch with some sort of tactical plan. That was trash, really.

Manchester City Centre. 5 hours til kickoff.

And my Heineken Cup?
My day to go to Fado and be in a crowd of 200 ex-pat Irishmen and drink at 10 AM?
Ruined.
There will be no Brian O'Driscoll. No Jonny Sexton. No Leinster. Not even Munster or Ronan O'Gara.
It's a bunch of Frenchmen from Biarritz and Toulouse.
And I cant even go on the websites to have a look at the roster and see if there are any fit players worth watching anyway because I dont speak French and I dont know what "equipe" means and nor do I care. It's not that I'm parochial. I speak German and a smattering of Polish and Greek and studied Latin in school. I just don't like the French particularly. Except the dudes from Justice and Phoenix. They put out a good tune.

He will be missed.

So there will sadly be no repeats of last year's good times pertaining to sports finals.

In watching this Pens vs French Speaking Canadians game tonight I thought about a man I saw on the Discovery Channel once.

Why don't hockey teams just put Uribes in their nets?

I mean it should work, right? I'm not being hateful. Just geometrically speaking, the goal would be fully protected right?

Just put some skates on Uribe and get one of those Zambonis to carry him out to the ice and then push him towards the net and just let him block. And build special gear so the puck deflects off of him to his teammates.
It's genius I say.

England had an incredible innings today and credit to Chris Gayle for choosing to bowl first because his bet paid off well. Windies come back to only chase 60 in 6 overs.

I've got one of my friends interested in cricket (huge kudos to him as most American men are far too shortsighted to see the beauty of the sport) and he asked if D/L would be equivalent to being down 0-3 in football and making a comeback.

Well, no. It would be like if at the half, you were down 0-3 and the referees decided to cut the second half down to 10 minutes and you only needed to net 1 for the win.

D/L in test or even ODI makes sense I suppose. Rain can be a real bother. But T20 lasts 3 hours. Either sort it out or dont but no need to call in nuclear physicists to map out some sort of mathematical equation only the truly insane can comprehend.

I'm not pleased with it and I'm not pleased with Michael Lumb's choice to wear clown lipstick a la Peter Siddle today either. NO NO NO NO NO.

England Cricket World T20 Adds New Faces to the Squad

Well, we've lost Freddie. Nobody is pleased about that. But Luke Wright appears to be a promising pace bowler and we don't mind looking at him either.

That is we dont mind on days when he hasnt over done with the coiffing and highlighting. Seriously, Luke, less is more.
At any rate, I've seen him play at Kent Spitfires in the County T20 with Sussex. Oh yes. I have.

He's got great potential and I'd like to see more from this kid. And again, less product in le hair.

And another, Eoin Morgan, showing off his skills at bat. Not only is Moggie handsome with an awesome name, he's Irish born. His presence on the squad makes me feel less like a traitor to my heritage and for that I thank him.

England are off to a good start, defeating Bangladesh by 7 wickets. I believe WIndies are up next May 3. I love me some Chris Gayle (we're twitter friends) but I'm afraid I will be hoping to see him shut down.
